How to Clean and Sanitize Your Lipstick Collection

We spend a lot of time and money finding the perfect lipstick shades, but how often do we think about the hygiene of our collection? Every time you swipe a lipstick directly onto your lips, you are transferring skin cells, oils, and potentially bacteria back into the tube. Over time, this can lead to products going rancid, causing breakouts around the mouth, or even spreading infections like cold sores. In this guide, we’re showing you how to sanitize lipstick using professional methods that will keep your lips healthy and your collection in top shape.

Why Sanitation Matters

Lipstick is a "wet" product, often containing oils and waxes that can harbor bacteria if not cared for. While most lipsticks contain preservatives to prevent microbial growth, these are not invincible. Regular cleaning is especially important if you’ve recently been sick, if you share your makeup with others (which we generally don't recommend!), or if you haven't used a product in a long time.

If you’re looking to refresh your collection with high-quality, stable formulas, our Trending Shades section is a great place to see what's currently topping the market. To find affordable replacements for any products that have become unsanitary, our Dupe Finder is an essential resource for finding budget-friendly matches.

How to Sanitize Lipstick: The Professional Method

  1. The Spray Method: The easiest and most effective way to sanitize a bullet lipstick is with 70% Isopropyl Alcohol. Pour some alcohol into a small spray bottle. Twist your lipstick all the way up and lightly mist the entire bullet. Let it air dry for 30 seconds before twisting it back down. The alcohol will kill any surface bacteria and then evaporate completely.
  2. The Wipe Method: If you don't have a spray bottle, you can dip the tip of the lipstick bullet directly into a small cap of 70% alcohol for a few seconds. Gently wipe the very top layer of the lipstick with a clean tissue to remove any residue.
  3. Cleaning the Component: Don't forget the tube itself! Use a cotton pad soaked in alcohol to wipe down the outside of the lipstick case and the inside of the cap. This is where a lot of grime and bacteria can hide.

Special Care for Liquid Lipsticks and Glosses

Liquid lipsticks and glosses are more difficult to sanitize because the applicator is constantly being dipped back into the product. The best way to keep these clean is through prevention: never apply them directly to your lips if you are sick, and never share them. If you suspect a liquid product has been contaminated, it is unfortunately best to toss it.

When to Throw It Away

No amount of cleaning can save a product that has truly expired. If your lipstick has changed smell (smelling like old crayons or rancid oil), if the texture has become gritty, or if it has started to "sweat" persistently, it is time for the trash. As we’ve discussed in our guide on expiration, using old products is a major risk for your lip health.
